Last day of racing - BMW Dragon Gold Cup

This last day offered some sun and a steady southeasterly wind of 7 – 10m/s, 14 – 20kts. After three general recalls the boats were off. The Race Committee had planned two races but only one was completed. Skipper Anatoly Loginov in RUS27 and his crew Andrey Kirilyuk, Alexander Shalagin were the overall winners of the BMW Dragon Gold Cup 2010.

First start is 1000 today. Two races planned and winds are exprected to be up to 10 m/s with gusts up to 14 m/s. Quite a contrast in comparison with yesterday's wind!

Third day of racing

The weather forecast for Wednesday promised lots of rain and wind, both decreasing in the afternoon. Two races were planned but an approaching thunderstorm and very weak winds made the Race Committee order the sailors to return to port and the second race was cancelled. Winner today was Lars Hendricson in UKR8, who also won race two on Monday. Today’s best Swede was Hans Wallén in SWE316, who finished 5th.

Second day of racing

On the second day of racing the Marstrand fjord took its toll. After a couple of restarts the race was on its way but westerly winds up to 13 m/s, 26 kts and heavy seas caused some 15 boats to retire. A second race was scheduled today but was cancelled.

The first day of racing offered cloudy weather with good sailing conditions; steady winds from the north west around 5 m/s, 10 kts, increasing during the afternoon. After two general recalls the boats started an hour and a half late at 13.30.

Impressive opening ceremony at Carlsten fortress

Led by drummers, soldiers in old fashioned uniforms and 17 flag bearers; participants, volunteers and sponsors marched up the steep incline to Carlsten Fortress, where Commandant Eive Swanberg received them all. The evening began with speeches by Principal Race Officer Kerstin Holmberg and RGYC (GKSS) chairman Lennart Svantesson. The ISAF president Göran Petersson then declared the BMW Dragon Gold Cup officially opened.

Sailors from around the world meet at Marstrand to compete in BMW Dragon Gold Cup. Total notified Dragons are an impressive 102 boats. In addition to the many participants from the Nordic countries the most remarkable is the high number of participants from Russia.

The Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, GKSS, celebrates its 150th anniversary with arranging the BMW Dragon Gold Cup August 5th- 13th 2010, sponsored by BMW Sweden AB and Bilia Group Gothenburg AB. The event are to be held in Marstrand, which for more than a hundred years been the main arena for international yachting events on the Swedish west coast. As organizers GKSS will provide close and exciting racing, as well as a full social program with lots of activities for both participants and their families.
